complex procedure that requires time, specific expertise, and an in-depth knowledge of Italian legislation and consular practices.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">My idea, in writing this blog is to provide you with an overall understanding of the steps to be taken, interpretation and may vary depending on the competent Consulate.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: States.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The official reference portal for identifying the appropriate visa is <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>\u201cIl visto per l\u2019Italia\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> (MAECI), which provides guidance based on the purpose of stay (study, work, family, elective residence, etc.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>2) The most common routes to \u201cliving in Italy\u201d (U.S. citizens)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>A) Elective Residence Visa<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Who it is for:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Individuals who wish to live in Italy without working, supporting themselves through \u201cpassive or stable income\u201d (e.g. pensions, annuities, Work Visa (subordinate employment or specific cases)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Who it is for:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Individuals relocating for employment with an employer and an Italian authorisation procedure.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>General mechanism:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In most cases, a <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>nulla osta<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> (work authorisation) is required, be initiated by the employer (Italian or foreign but resident in Italy) in accordance with the annual quotas established by the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Decreto Flussi<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and the relevant ministerial circulars.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In particular, Interministerial Circular No. 8047 of 16 October 2025, as subsequently amended by Circular No. 8524 of 30 October 2025, provides operational guidelines for the implementation of the Prime Ministerial Decree of 2 October 2025 concerning the planning of entry flows of non-EU workers into Italy for the 2026\u20132028 period.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">By way of derogation from the quota system, certain categories of workers may apply for a <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>nulla osta<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> at any time of the year without numerical limits, as provided for by the Consolidated Immigration Act (e.g. EU Blue Card holders, executives, researchers, nurses, artists).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Once the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>nulla osta<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> is issued, the visa application must be submitted within 90 days to the Italian consular authority in the country of residence.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>C) Study Visa (over 90 days)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Who it is for:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Students enrolled in educational or academic programmes in Italy for extended periods.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: entry into Italy for a long but fixed period in order to attend university courses, within the quotas established by Legislative Decree No. 286\/1998 and under the conditions set out in Presidential Decree No. 394\/1999.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">It is generally valid for the duration of the chosen course.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Before applying for the visa, non-EU applicants must:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Detailed requirements and procedures are defined annually by a decree of the Ministry of Universities and Research (MIUR), in agreement with MAECI and the Ministry of the Interior.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>D) Family Visa (family reunification \/ family reasons)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Who it is for:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><br \/>Family members of legally resident foreign nationals or, in certain cases, family members of Italian or EU citizens, depending on specific circumstances.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The family visa is an expression of the right to family unity, as established in particular by Articles 28 and 29 of the Consolidated Immigration Act (Legislative Decree No. 286\/1998), as amended.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Family members eligible for reunification are exclusively those identified in Article 2 of Legislative Decree No. 30\/2007.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Key points:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p and multiple entries (depending on the case).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>E) Digital Nomad \/ Remote Worker Visa<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Who it is for:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Non-EU nationals who intend to live in Italy while working remotely for a foreign employer or client, subject to specific requirements.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Consular reference (example):<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><br \/>The Italian Consulate in New York classifies this category as a digital nomad \/ remote worker visa.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">It is particularly important to consult the website of the competent Consulate, as requirements and supporting evidence (contracts, insurance, income, etc.) may be interpreted and requested in a specific manner.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>3) After entry into Italy: the mandatory step of the <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The residence permit is issued for the period provided for by the entry visa and may not exceed:<br \/>a) three months, for visits, business, and tourism;<br \/>b) nine months, for seasonal work;<br \/>c) one year, for attendance at certified study or vocational training courses (renewable annually for multi-year courses);<br \/>d) two years, for self-employment, permanent subordinate employment, and family reunification (renewable);<br \/>e) a duration linked to documented needs or other cases provided for by the Consolidated Immigration
